Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 38400 Brake Spring Remover and Installer
    • J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Important: 

       • Mark the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange in order to ensure proper wheel balance upon assembly.
       • Mark the relationship of the brake drum to the axle flange in order to ensure proper wheel balance upon assembly.

  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the brake drum.
  5. If removing the brake drum is difficult, performing the following steps may help:

    • Make sure that the parking brake is released.
    • Use a rubber mallet to tap gently on the outer rim of the drum and/or around the inner drum diameter near the spindle. Do not deform the drum using excessive force.
    • Push the parking brake lever off the stop using a screwdriver inserted through the inspection hole (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Adjust the brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  2. Install the brake drum, aligning to the marks made during removal.
  3. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Lower the vehicle.
