Starter Replacement 2.4L

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 97628  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the air inlet duct to the throttle body.
  3. Remove the top starter bolt.
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  5. Remove the lower closeout panel.
  6. Remove the lower starter bolt.
  7. Position the engine wiring harness aside.
  8. Position the starter for access to the solenoid wiring.
  9. Remove the electrical wiring.
  10. Remove the starter.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 97628  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the electrical wiring.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the cable to the solenoid 12 N·m (106 lb in)

  3. Position the starter to the engine.
  4. Install the lower starter bolt.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 90 N·m (66 lb ft)

  6. Reposition the engine wiring harness.
  7. Install the lower closeout panel.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Install the top starter bolt.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 90 N·m (66 lb ft)

  11. Connect the air inlet duct to the throttle body.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft)

Starter Replacement 3.1L

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the lower closeout panel.
  4. Remove the starter motor-to-engine bolts, then lower the starter.
  5. Remove the electrical leads.
  6. Remove the starter.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the starter.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.   3. Connect the leads to the starter.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the cable to the solenoid 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  5. Install the starter to the engine bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install the lower closeout panel.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).
