Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 296676  Size: SH
  1. Remove the driver's insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.
  2. Reposition the intermediate shaft seal and remove the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt (3).
  3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.

  5. Object Number: 442102  Size: SH
  6. Remove the intermediate shaft seal (1) from the steering gear (2).

  7. Object Number: 442116  Size: SH
  8. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt (2).
  9. Remove the intermediate shaft (1) from the steering gear (3).
  10. Remove the intermediate shaft (1) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 442116  Size: SH
  1. Install the intermediate shaft (1) on the steering gear (3).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt (2).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  5. Install the intermediate shaft seal (1) to the steering gear (2).
  6. Install the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  7. Lower the vehicle.

  8. Object Number: 296676  Size: SH
  9. Install the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt (3).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  11. Install the driver's side insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.
