Removal Procedure

  1. Depressurize the fuel system. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Drain the coolant. Recover the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling and Flushing in Engine Cooling.
  5. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  6. Remove the rocker arms. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  7. Important: Keep the valve lifters in order. You must install the lifters in the original position.

  8. Remove the valve lifter guide bolts.
  9. Remove the valve lifter guide.
  10. Remove the valve lifter.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the lifters into their original positions. Coat the valve lifter with GM P/N 1052365 or its equivalent.
  2. Install the valve lifter guide.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the valve lifter guide bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  6. Install the rocker arms. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  7. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  8. Refill the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling and Flushing in Engine Cooling.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
