Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 36011 Spark Plug Removal Tool.

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Remove the accelerator and cruise control cables out of the hold down clip.

  4. Object Number: 388419  Size: SH
  5. Remove the fuel line retainer clip bolt.

  6. Object Number: 388402  Size: SH
  7. Disconnect the Electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) 11 pin harness electrical connector.

  8. Object Number: 388403  Size: SH
  9. Remove the Ignition Coil and the Electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) assembly to camshaft housing bolts.

    Notice: Spark plug boots often adhere to the spark plugs. Use tool J 36011 in order to remove by first twisting and then pulling upward on retainers. Reinstall the boots and the retainers on the ignition coil housing secondary terminals. The boots and the retainers must be in place on the ignition coil housing secondary terminals prior to the ignition coil and the electronic ignition control module assembly installation or ignition control system damage may result.

  11. Remove the Ignition Coil and Electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) assembly from the engine.

  13. Remove the housing to cover screws.

    Important: When removing the housing from the cover make sure the ground strap stays in place.

  15. Disconnect the coil harness electrical connector from the Ignition Control Module.
  16. Remove the housing from the cover.

  18. Remove the Ignition Coil(s) from the housing.

  19. Object Number: 388411  Size: SH
  20. Disconnect the Ignition Coil(s) electrical connector.

  22. Remove the contact springs from the housing.

  24. Remove the Ignition Coil seal(s) from the Ignition Coil(s).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 388414  Size: SH
  1. Install the Ignition Coil seal(s) into the Ignition Coil(s) (replace with new seals).

  2. Object Number: 388412  Size: SH
  3. Install the contact springs into the housing (use petroleum jelly to retain).

  4. Object Number: 388411  Size: SH
  5. Connect the Ignition Coil(s) electrical connector.

  6. Object Number: 388410  Size: SH
  7. Install the Ignition Coil(s) into the housing.

  8. Object Number: 388407  Size: SH
  9. Install the ground strap (if the ground strap is not already installed).

  10. Object Number: 388409  Size: SH
  11. Connect the Ignition Coil(s) electrical connector to the Ignition Control Module.
  12. Important: When installing the housing to the cover make sure the ground strap stays in place.

  13. Install the housing to the cover.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  15. Install the housing to cover screws.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the housing to cover screws 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  17. Install the spark plug boots and the retainers to the housing (if the spark plug boot and retainer is not already installed).

  19. Install the Ignition Coil and Electronic Ignition Control Module assembly to the engine while carefully aligning the spark boots to the spark plug terminals.

  20. Object Number: 388403  Size: SH
  21. Install the Ignition Coil and the Electronic Ignition Control Module assembly to camshaft housing bolts after coating the threads with Sealant LOCTITE GM 12346004 or equivalent.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 22 N·m (16 lb Ft).

    Important: The ICM cover bolts must be installed with isolator washers with the rubber side facing down.

  23. Connect the Electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) 11 pin harness electrical connector.

  25. Install the fuel line retainer clip bolt.

  27. Install the accelerator and cruise control cables into the hold down clip.

  29. Connect the negative battery cable.
