This bulletin has been prepared to assist in identifying 1984 Chevrolet model vehicles and components as described below. Other Divisions may use similar components an identification locations.

LIGHT DUTY (10-30) TRUCK VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
'C', 'K', 'G', 'S', and E1 Camino trucks display the VIN plate or the left hand side of the instrument panel area. On 'P' 42 models, the plate is attached to the top of the radiator support, and on Motor Home Chassis 'P' 32, to the dash and toe panel.
MEDIUM DUTY TRUCK VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
On Conventional Cabs, the VIN plate is mounted on the left door lock pillar. On School Bus Chassis, the plate is attached to the engine side of the cowl. On 'P' models, it is located on top of the radiator support panel.
BODY IDENTIFICATION PLATE
On the Chevrolet, El Camino and Monte Carlo, the body identification plate is located on the upper horizontal surface of the cowl plenum chamber. The Cavalier, Celebrity, Camaro, Citation and Chevette plate is located on the upper horizontdl surface of the radiator support.
CORVETTE BODY PAINT AND TRIM PLATE
The body paint and trim plate which is stamped with the trim, paint and time built codes is attached to the left door hinge pillar.
LIGHT DUTY TRUCK SERVICE PARTS IDENTIFICATION STICKER
A Service Parts Identification Sticker is furnished for L.D. Trucks except El Camino. It contains a complete listing of the vehicle identification number (VIN) wheel base and all production options used to assemble the vehicle, such as suspension, body equipment, engine, axle, transmission, tires, etc.
On 'C-K', 'G' and 'S' models, this sticker is attached to the inner glove compartment. For 'P' models, it is mailed separately to the Dealer. On 'G' the sticker is located on the inner hood panel surface.
1984-85 Service Parts Identification Label Locations
The body plates will be phased out plant by plant beginning at start of production 1984. Rather than using body plates, the plates will install Service Parts Identification labels at the following locations:

Chevrolet produced engines will be stamped with a source, production date and engine suffix. Other General Motors produced engines used in Chevrolet vehicles will use a label affixed to the engine assembly.

ENGINE CODE LOCATIONS
L4 1.6L ------- The code is stamped on a pad on the right side of the engine below the number one cylinder parallel to the cylinder case deck.
L4 2.0L ------- The engine suffix and build date is steel stamped on a horizontal machined surface on the left rear side of the cylinder case under the exhaust manifold.
L4 2.5L ------- The code is on a sticker placed on the timing gear cover and is also stamped on the block, water pump end, just below the cylinder head. This is a three letter alpha-numeric code indicating engine type.
V6 2.8L ------- The code is stamped on a horizontal machined surface on the block just forward of the intake manifold.

V6 3.8L 231 CID (Front Mounted Distributor) --------------- Located on the front face og the R.H. cylinder head on a paper label. Also traceability label on inboard side of L.H. rocker arm cover.
V6 3.8L 229 CID (Rear Mounted Distributor) --------------- Stamped on cylinder case pad immediately forward of the right cylinder head.
V6 4.3L 262 CID (Diesel) --------------- Label located on rear of L.H. rocker arm cover.
V8 5.7L 350 CID (Diesel) --------------- The code is on a label located on flat surface on L.H. rocker arm cover.
V8 5.0L and 5.7L ---------------- Stamped on cylinder case pad immediately forward of the right cylinder head.
Notice: In addition, all passenger car engines (except 3.8L 231 CID) will have a portion of the vehicle identification number stamped near the engine production code, usually near the right hand side of the cylinder case. This condensed identificaiton number consists of the division number, model year, assembly plant designation and vehicle buidl sequence number.

Four Speed 76MM
The code is stamped on a diagonal case surface directly beneath the clutch lever cable reaction bracket.
The Muncie 76mm stamp consists of two (2)alpha and three (3) numeric characters as shown below:

Manual Transmissions
Four-Speed transmissions built at Chevrolet plants will carry a production code number. The code number identifies the source, model year, month and day produced.
The transmission codes are located as follows:
Four-Speed
The Muncie (cast iron case) transmission (Saginaw type) is stamped on the machined surface of the left side of the case just below the side cover.
The Muncie 70mm (aluminum case) transmission is stamped on the bottom center front of case.

Four-Speed Manual With Automatic Overdrive (Doug Nash) MK2
Source trademark appears above speedo gear opening.
The Doug Nash transmissions have the source code, model year, unit serial number and ratio identification stamped on two (2) metal tags. One (1) tag is attached to the T-10 transmission side cover lower bolt, and the other tag is on the overdrive pan front bolt.

Automatic Transmissions
THM 180C Automatic Transmission
The THM 180C automatic transmission code and transmission serial number appears on a metal tag fastened to the left side of the transmission just rearward of the converter housing.
THM 200C Automatic Transmission
The identification tag is located on the right side of the transmission case and includes the model year, application code and sequence number.

THM 250C and 350C transmissions produced by Chevrolet Parma have the production code stamped on the governor cover.

THM 440-T4 Four Speed Automatic
The code is located on a stamped metal tag on the rear face of the transaxle case adjacent to right hand axle opening.

THM 700-4R Automatic Transmission
The identification number is stamped into right rear oil pan rail. The format includes the year, model, Julian build date and shift.

PASSENGER CAR TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION NUMBER FOR 'SERVICE' USAGE -------------------------------------------------------------------- The following system will be used to identify service transmission assemblies. This number system applies to domestically produced complete service transmission assemblies only. Transmission cases are no longer identified. Manufacturing plants will number each service assembly as it is produced. The first letter will designate the GM Division which produced the unit - 'C' (Chevrolet). The second letter will indicate the type of unit 'T' (transmission). The number following the letter will designate the model year - '4' (1984). The last five digits specify the service replacement sequence number. The group of numbers to be used by Chevrolet Manufacturing plants are as follows: PLANT SERIAL SEQUENCE ----- --------------- Chevrolet - Parma Transmission Plant 00001 to 14999 Chevrolet - Muncie Transmission Plant 25000 to 44999
EXAMPLE: Number CT400175 designates Chevrolet transmission, year and 175th unit produced for service at Parma.
Upon completion of the serial sequence, the plant will reuse the above numbers using a letter prefix, such as A, B and C.

Hydra-Matic Division 00001 to 99999
Hydra-Matic Division transmissions will be numbered with the letter 'H' regardless of the GM Division using the transmission.

This number system applies to complete service transmission assemblies only. Transmission cases are no longer identified. Manufacturing plants will number each service assembly as it is produced. The first letter will designate the GM Division which produced the unit - 'C' (Chevrolet).
The second letter will indicate the type of unit 'T' (transmission). The number following the letter will designate the model year - '4' (1984). The last five digits specify the service replacement sequence number. The group of numbers to be used by Chevrolet Manufacturing plants are as follows:

Hydra-Matic transmissions will be numbered with the letter 'H' regardless of the GM Division using the transmission.
EXAMPLE: Number CT400175 designates Chevrolet transmission, year and 175th unit produced for service at Parma.
Upon completion of the serial sequence, the plant will re-use the above numbers using a letter prefix, such as A, B or C to indicate late production transmission; for example: CT2A0001.

Axles are manufactured by Chevrolet Buffalo, Chevrolet Gear and A xle, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and GM of Canada. Divisional Manufacturer code letters will be metal stamped on the axle tube adjacent to the carrier for field identification (see example). Letters and numerals 1/4 inch high are metal stamped on right front inboard side, 3 inch outboard of carrier or are located on a metal tag attached to cover bolt.

The Chevrolet produced axles use a prefix code stamped into the axle tube for axle code identification. Dana produced axles use the same prefix code as the Chevrolet axles, but they display these codes on a strip of tape attached to the outboard end of the axle tube.
