Subject: Pop Snap Noise in the Front Suspension When Braking

Models:.

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

Condition/Concern:

Condition: A pop/snap noise which is heard and felt in the floor board of the vehicle. This concern may exhibit a very distinct driving sequence to duplicate or it may occur during normal steering/driving maneuvers. It is generally intermittent and is not effected by the condition of the road surface nor is it temperature sensitive. The concern generally appears as follows:

* one loud pop during braking

* the pop is generated generally by braking in the forward direction,

only after the vehicle has had the brakes applied in reverse. You can also get the same noise by braking in reverse, only after the vehicle has had the brakes applied in the forward direction. In other words, you must travel in one direction, apply the brakes, then travel in the other direction and use the brakes in order for the pop to occur. If the pop occurs going forward, you can do multiple stops going forward and the pop will not reoccur going forward until you brake in reverse again. The inverse of this symptom is true for the pop going backward.

* this pop cannot be duplicated when using the park brake to stop the vehicle in either direction.

* this concern is very difficult to locate even with chassis ears as it sounds like it is coming from the any of the following components control arms, ball Joints, calipers, tie rods etc. This concern is extremely difficult to diagnose.

* this concern can be duplicated during some maneuvers even with your foot off the brake, but is most common as described above.

Recommendation/Instructions:

An internally damaged wheel bearing could cause this concern. The bearing will not appear damaged when you rotate the wheel or inspect the exterior of the bearing/hub assembly, but if one is to cut the bearing apart you will see the damage to the cage which causes the concern. Replace the sealed wheel bearing/hub assembly.

.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
