Check for a worn or damaged drive axle joint. Refer to Drive Axle Diagnosis in Drive Axle.

Is the drive axle joint OK?

Go to Step 3

Go to Step 2

Repair or replace the worn or damaged drive axle joint. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Boot Replacement or Wheel Drive Shaft Outer Joint and Boot Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.

Has the knock disappeared?

System OK

Go to Step 3

1. Remove the transaxle assembly. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
2. Check for a worn side gear hub counterbore.

Is the counterbore OK?

System OK

Go to Step 4

Repair or replace the worn counterbore. Refer to Differential Case Disassemble in the M86/M94 Section of the Transmission Unit Repair Manual.

Has the knock disappeared?

System OK
