Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 36011 Spark Plug Removal Tool.

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Object Number: 388400 Size: SH
  3. Remove the accelerator and cruise control cables out of the hold down clip.

  4. Object Number: 388419 Size: SH
  5. Remove the fuel line retainer clip bolt.

  6. Object Number: 388402 Size: SH

  9. Remove the Ignition Coil and the Electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) assembly to camshaft housing bolts.

  10. Object Number: 388405 Size: SH

Notice: Spark plug boots often adhere to the spark plugs. Use tool J 36011 in order to remove by first twisting and then pulling upward on retainers. Reinstall the boots and the retainers on the ignition coil housing secondary terminals. The boots and the retainers must be in place on the ignition coil housing secondary terminals prior to the ignition coil and the electronic ignition control module assembly installation or ignition control system damage may result.

  11. Remove the Ignition Coil and Electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) assembly from the engine.

  12. Object Number: 388406 Size: SH
  13. Remove the housing to cover screws.

  14. Object Number: 388409 Size: SH

Important: When removing the housing from the cover make sure the ground strap stays in place.

  15. Disconnect the coil harness electrical connector from the Ignition Control Module.

Installation Procedure

Important:  DO NOT wipe grease from the module or coil if the same module is to be replaced. If a new module is to be installed, a package of silicone grease will be included with it. Spread the grease on the metal face of the module and on the cover where the module seats. This grease is necessary for module cooling.

  1. Install the Ignition Control Module to the cover.

  2. Object Number: 388416 Size: SH

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the Ignition Control Module to cover screws.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the screws to 4 N·m (35 lb in).
