Removal Procedure

CAUTION: When you are performing service on or near the SRS components or the SRS wiring, you must disable the SRS system. Refer to Disabling the SRS System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SRS system repairs.

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SRS system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SRS Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SRS components or the SRS wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SRS components or the SRS wiring, disable the SRS system. Refer to Disabling the SRS System in SRS.

  1. Disable the SRS system. Refer to Disabling the SRS .
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position to unlock the steering wheel.

  3. Object Number: 245788  Size: SH
  4. Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees from the straight-ahead position in order to gain access to the access holes behind the steering wheel.
  5. Insert a screwdriver into each access hole and push the leaf spring to release the pin that retains the inflator module.

  6. Object Number: 288763  Size: SH
  7. Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees to gain access to the remaining access holes.

  8. Object Number: 387688  Size: SH
  9. Insert a screwdriver into each access hole and push the leaf spring to release the pin that retains the inflator module.

  10. Object Number: 245799  Size: SH
  11. Tilt the top of the inflator module rearward to gain access to the SRS wiring.
  12. Disconnect the SRS lead wire from the clip on the inflator module.
  13. Disconnect the SRS lead wire from the clip on the steering wheel.
  14. Disconnect the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
  15. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  16. Remove the inflator module from the vehicle.

Caution

When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:

    • Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module.
    • Make sure the bag opening points away from you.

When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator rests. When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.

Installation Procedure

  1. Connect the electrical connector and the CPA retainer.

  2. Object Number: 288768  Size: SH
  3. Connect the inflator module.

  4. Object Number: 288768  Size: SH
  5. Connect the electrical connector.
  6. Connect the SRS lead wire to the clip on the steering wheel.
  7. Connect the SRS lead wire to the clip on the inflator module.
  8. Important: Make sure that the SRS wires do not get pinched during installation of the inflator module.

  9. Install the inflator module by pressing the inflator module firmly onto the steering wheel to engage and latch the leaf springs on the four notched pins.
  10. Enable the SRS system. Refer to Enabling the SRS .
