Strut Assembly Replacement HSV Except Clubsport

Tools Required

E7115 E7115 Angle Wrench.

Removal Procedure - Type B

    Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1949927  Size: SH
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the VehicleLifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the front wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and InstallationTire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  3. Important: Nuts with micro-encapsulated thread sealant must be discarded after removal.

  4. Remove the stabiliser bar link to strut assembly bracket retaining nut (2).
  5. Discard the nut.

  6. Disconnect the stabiliser bar link (1) from the strut assembly bracket (3).

  7. Object Number: 1949946  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (1).
  9. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor harness connector (2) from the strut assembly bracket (3).
  10. Disconnect the brake hose (4) from the strut assembly bracket (3).

  11. Object Number: 1949945  Size: SH
  12. Disconnect the ESC harness connector (1) from the strut assembly (2).

  13. Object Number: 1955530  Size: SH

    Important: The steering knuckle to strut assembly retaining bolts (3), nuts (1) and washers (2) are single use parts. They must be discarded after removal.

  14. Remove the steering knuckle to strut assembly retaining bolts (3), nuts (1) and washers (2).
  15. Discard the bolts, nuts and washers.

  16. Disconnect the steering knuckle (1) from the strut assembly (2).
  17. Lower the vehicle.

  18. Object Number: 1961825  Size: SH
  19. Remove the stud dust cover (1) from the strut assembly to body retaining nut (2).
  20. Important: The strut assembly (4) must be supported from underneath before the strut assembly to body retaining nut (2) is removed.

  21. Remove the strut assembly to body retaining nut (2) while holding the strut piston shaft (4).
  22. Discard the nut.

  23. Remove the strut assembly to body retaining plate (3).
  24. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
  25. Inspect all parts for wear and damage, replace any damaged or worn components.

Installation Procedure - Type B

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1961827  Size: SH

    Important: The strut assembly retaining nut (1) must be checked for correct torque before installing the strut assembly into the vehicle. The strut assembly retaining nut torque must be 75 Nm (55 lb ft).

  1. Check the torque of the strut assembly retaining nut (1), correct if necessary.

  2. Object Number: 1961826  Size: SH
  3. Install the strut assembly (3) to the vehicle (4).
  4. Install strut assembly to body retaining plate (1).
  5. Important:  The strut assembly to body retaining nut (2) must not be fully tightened at this stage.

  6. Install the NEW strut assembly to body retaining nut (2) to the strut assembly (3).
  7. Do not fully tighten at this stage.

  8. Raise the vehicle.

  10. Install the steering knuckle (1) to the strut assembly (2).

  11. Object Number: 1955530  Size: SH

    Important:  Pivot the hub and steering knuckle assembly sufficiently to line up the bolt holes in the steering knuckle and strut assembly.

    Important:  The strut assembly to steering knuckle retaining bolts (3) and nuts (1) must not be fully tightened at this stage.

  12. Install the NEW steering knuckle to strut assembly retaining bolts (3), nuts (1) and washers (2).
  13. Do not fully tighten at this stage.

  14. Lower the vehicle.

  15. Object Number: 1961828  Size: SH
  16. Tighten the NEW strut assembly to body retaining nut (2).
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 55 Nm (40 lb ft).

  18. Install the stud dust cover (1) to the strut assembly to body retaining nut (2).
  19. Raise the vehicle.

  20. Object Number: 1949946  Size: SH
  21. Install the brake hose (4) to the strut assembly bracket (3).
  22. Connect the wheel speed sensor harness connector (1).
  23. Connect the wheel speed sensor connector (2) to the strut assembly bracket (3).

  24. Object Number: 1949945  Size: SH
  25. Connect the ESC harness connector (1) to the strut assembly (2).

  26. Object Number: 1949927  Size: SH
  27. Connect the stabiliser bar link (1) to the strut assembly bracket (3).
  28. Install the stabiliser bar link to strut assembly bracket retaining nut (2).
  29. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 55 Nm (40 lb ft).

  30. Install the front wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and InstallationTire and Wheel Removal and Installation
  31. Remove the safety stands.
  32. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  33. Bounce the vehicle several times to settle the suspension.
  34. Check and adjust the wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment MeasurementWheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.

  35. Object Number: 1943441  Size: SH
  36. Tighten the strut assembly to steering knuckle retaining bolts (2) and nuts (1).
  37. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts a first pass to 100 Nm (74 lb ft).

    Tighten
    Tighten the nuts an additional 90 degrees.

Removal Procedure

  10. Disconnect the brake hose (5) from the strut bracket (1).

    Important: The strut assembly to steering knuckle retaining bolts (3) nuts (1) and washers (2) are single use parts. They must be discarded after removal.

  12. Remove the strut assembly to steering knuckle retaining bolts (3), nuts (1) and washers (2).
  13. Discard the bolts, nuts and washers.

  14. Disconnect the steering knuckle (1) from the strut assembly (2).
  15. Lower the vehicle.

  10. Install the steering knuckle (1) to the strut assembly (2).

  11. Object Number: 2015972  Size: SH

  16. Tighten the NEW strut assembly to body retaining nut (2).
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 55 N·m (40 lb ft).

  18. Install the dust cover (1) to the strut assembly to body retaining nut (2).
  19. Raise the vehicle.

  20. Object Number: 1949936  Size: SH
  21. Install the brake hose (5) to the strut assembly bracket (1).
  22. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (3).
  23. Install the wheel speed sensor wiring harness (4) to the strut assembly bracket (2).

  24. Object Number: 1949927  Size: SH
  25. Connect the stabiliser bar link (1) to the strut assembly bracket (3).
  26. Install the stabiliser bar link to strut assembly bracket retaining nut (2).
  27. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  28. Install the front wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and InstallationTire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  29. Remove the safety stands.
  30. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  31. Bounce the vehicle several times to settle the suspension.
  32. Check and adjust the wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment MeasurementWheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.

  33. Object Number: 2015988  Size: SH
  34. Tighten the strut assembly to steering knuckle retaining bolts (2) and nuts (1).
  35. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts a first pass to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

    Tighten
    Tighten the nuts an additional 90 degrees.
