Circuit/System Description

Each of the audio output channel circuits (+) and (-), at the radio and audio amplifier have a DC bias voltage that is one half of the battery voltage. When using a DMM, each of the audio output channel circuits will measure approximately 6.5V DC. The audio being played on the system is produced by a varying AC voltage that is centered around the DC bias voltage on the same circuit. The AC voltage is what causes the speaker cone to move and produce sound. This voltage will vary depending on what type of audio is being listened to, talk or music, and type of music, as well as the volume setting of the system. Low volume and talk settings will measure around 1V AC and less, where constant music may measure 3V AC and slightly higher. The amplifier may only supplied an amplified signal to the subwoofers, or on the premium audio systems, the amplifier will amplify all of the audio signals. The amplifier can not set DTCs. The amplifier mute circuit from the radio to the amplifier sends a 4V signal to disable the rear speakers, and is 2V when the mute is OFF.

Diagnostic Aids

    • Improper speaker mounting or loose trim may cause an audible buzz or distortion. Inspect the appropriate speaker and the surrounding interior trim for proper and secure mounting. If the speaker or surrounding interior trim is found to be loose or improperly secured, correctly secure the item.
    • When equipped with an amplifier, it is possible for some individual circuit faults to affect more than one speakers operation. Perform diagnostic tests in the sequence listed to avoid misdiagnosis.
    • The front tweeter speakers are connected to the same channel as the front door speakers.

Circuit/System Verification

Radio ON, adjust the fade and balance controls on the radio to test all four channels individually. Each channel should produce clear and even sound.

Without Amplifier

Radio ON, verify clear audio is heard from each audio speaker.

If audio is inoperative from all speakers, replace the radio.
If audio is inoperative from one or more, but not all, speakers or the audio emitted from the speakers is not clear, refer to Speaker Circuit Malfunction - without Amplifier.

With Amplifier -- UQG

Radio ON, verify clear audio is heard from each audio speaker.

If audio is inoperative from one or both subwoofers, refer to Amplifier Circuit Malfunction.
If audio is inoperative from one or more rear speakers or the audio emitted from the speakers is not clear, refer to Speaker Circuit Malfunction - with Amplifier.

With Amplifier -- UQA

Radio ON, verify clear audio is heard from each audio speaker.

If audio is inoperative from all speakers, or just the rear speakers, refer to Amplifier Circuit Malfunction.
If audio is inoperative from one or more, but not all, speakers or the audio emitted from the speakers is not clear, refer to Speaker Circuit Malfunction - with Amplifier.

Circuit/System Testing

Speaker Circuit Malfunction - without Amplifier

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate speaker.
  2. Radio ON, test for 5.0-7.5 volts between the signal circuit terminal A and ground.
  3. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
    If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  4. Test for 5.0-7.5 V between the signal circuit terminal B and ground.
  5. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
    If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  6. If all circuits test normal, replace the speaker.

Amplifier Circuit Malfunction -- UQG

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the audio amplifier.
  2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 10 Ω between the ground circuit terminals listed below and ground.
  3. • Terminal 5
    • Terminal 12
    If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, test for B+ on the B+ circuit terminals listed below and ground.
  5. • Terminal 4
    • Terminal 11
    If less than the specified value, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  6. Radio ON, test for 5.0-7.5 V between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground.
  7. • Left rear speaker output (+) terminal 1
    • Left rear speaker output (-) terminal 6
    • Right rear speaker output (+) terminal 2
    • Right rear speaker output (-) terminal 7
    If less than the specified range, test the appropriate signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
    If greater than the specified range, test the appropriate signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  8. Ignition OFF, reconnect the amplifier and disconnect the appropriate subwoofer harness connectors.
  9. Radio ON, test for 5.0-7.5 V between the signal circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  10. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the amplifier.
    If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the amplifier.
  11. Test for 5.0-7.5 V between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground.
  12. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the amplifier.
    If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the amplifier.
  13. If all circuits test normal, replace the appropriate subwoofer.

Amplifier Circuit Malfunction UQA

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X3 harness connector at the audio amplifier.
  2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 10 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 8 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Reconnect the X3 harness connector and disconnect the X1 harness connector.
  5. Ignition ON, test for B+ between the B+ circuit terminal 4 and ground.
  6. If less then specified value, test the circuit for a short to ground, or an open/high resistance.
  7. Test for B+ between the remote enable signal circuit terminal 8
  8. If less then the specified value, test the circuit for a short to ground, or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  9. Radio ON, Mute OFF, test for 1.5 - 2.5 V between the amplifier mute signal circuit terminal 11 and ground.
  10. If less then the specified range, test the circuit for a short to ground, or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
    If greater then the specified range, test the circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  11. If all circuits test normal, replace the audio amplifier.

Speaker Circuit Malfunction -- With Amplifier UQG -- Front Speaker Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate speaker.
  2. Radio ON, test for 5.0-7.5 V between the signal circuit terminal A and ground.
  3. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
    If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  4. Test for 5.0-7.5 V between the signal circuit terminal B and ground.
  5. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
    If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  6. If all circuits test normal, replace the speaker.

Speaker Circuit Malfunction - with Amplifier UQG -- Rear Speaker Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the amplifier and the appropriate speaker harness connectors.
  2. Radio ON, test for 5.0-7.5 V between the signal circuit terminal A and ground.
  3. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
    If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  4. Test for 5.0-7.5 V between the signal circuit terminal B and ground.
  5. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
    If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  6. Ignition OFF, reconnect the harness connector at the audio amplifier.
  7. Radio ON, test for 5.0-7.5 V between the signal circuit terminal A and ground at the appropriate speaker.
  8. If not within the specified range, replace the amplifier.
  9. Radio ON, test for 5.0-7.5 V between the signal circuit terminal B and ground at the appropriate speaker.
  10. If not within the specified range, replace the amplifier.
  11. If all circuits test normal, replace the speaker.

Speaker Malfunction Radio Output Testing -- RHD -- UQA

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 connector at the amplifier.
  2. Ignition ON, radio ON, test for 5.0-7.5 volts between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground.
  3. • Left front low level audio signal (+) - terminal 15
    • Left front low level audio signal (-) - terminal 7
    • Right front low level audio signal (+) - terminal 14
    • Right front low level audio signal (-) - terminal 6
    • Left rear low level audio signal (+) - terminal 13
    • Left rear low level audio signal (-) - terminal 5
    • Right rear low level audio signal (+) - terminal 12
    • Right rear low level audio signal (-) - terminal 4
    If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
    If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  4. If all circuits test normal, replace the amplifier.

Speaker Malfunction Radio Output Testing -- LHD -- UQA

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 connector at the amplifier.
  2. Ignition ON, radio ON, test for 5.0-7.5 volts between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground.
  3. • Left front low level audio signal (+) - terminal 14
    • Left front low level audio signal (-) - terminal 6
    • Right front low level audio signal (+) - terminal 15
    • Right front low level audio signal (-) - terminal 7
    • Left rear low level audio signal (+) - terminal 12
    • Left rear low level audio signal (-) - terminal 4
    • Right rear low level audio signal (+) - terminal 13
    • Right rear low level audio signal (-) - terminal 5
    If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
    If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  4. If all circuits test normal, replace the amplifier.

Speaker Malfunction Amplifier Output Testing -- RHD --UQA

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X2 and X3 connectors at the amplifier.
  2. Radio ON, test for less than 1 volt between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground:
  3. • Left front speaker output (+) - terminal 5 X3
    • Left front speaker output (-) - terminal 1 X3
    • Right front speaker output (+) - terminal 8 X2
    • Right front low speaker output (-) - terminal 7 X2
    • Left rear speaker output (+) - terminal 15 X2
    • Left rear speaker output (-) - terminal 16 X2
    • Right rear speaker output (+) - terminal 2 X2
    • Right rear speaker output (-) - terminal 1 X2
    • Left subwoofer speaker output (+) - terminal 7 X3
    • Left subwoofer speaker output (-) - terminal 3 X3
    • Right subwoofer speaker output (+) - terminal 6 X3
    • Right subwoofer speaker output (-) - terminal 2 X3
    • Center speaker output (+) - terminal 4 X2
    • Center speaker output (-) - terminal 3 X2
    • Roof speaker output (+) - terminal 6 X2
    • Roof speaker output (-) - terminal 5 X2
    If greater than the specified range, test both circuits of the affected speaker for a short to voltage.
  4. Radio OFF, test for infinite resistance between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground:
  5. • Left front speaker output (+) - terminal 5 X3
    • Left front speaker output (-) - terminal 1 X3
    • Right front speaker output (+) - terminal 8 X2
    • Right front low speaker output (-) - terminal 7 X2
    • Left rear speaker output (+) - terminal 15 X2
    • Left rear speaker output (-) - terminal 16 X2
    • Right rear speaker output (+) - terminal 2 X2
    • Right rear speaker output (-) - terminal 1 X2
    • Left subwoofer speaker output (+) - terminal 7 X3
    • Left subwoofer speaker output (-) - terminal 3 X3
    • Right subwoofer speaker output (+) - terminal 6 X3
    • Right subwoofer speaker output (-) - terminal 2 X3
    • Center speaker output (+) - terminal 4 X2
    • Center speaker output (-) - terminal 3 X2
    • Roof speaker output (+) - terminal 6 X2
    • Roof speaker output (-) - terminal 5 X2
    If less than the specified value, test both circuits of the affected speaker for a short to ground.
  6. If all circuits test normal, reconnect all harness connectors at the amplifier.
  7. Radio ON, disconnect the appropriate speaker.
  8. Test for 5.0-7.5 volts between the signal circuit terminals and ground.
  9. If less then the specified range test the circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the amplifier.
    If greater then the specified range test the circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the amplifier.
  10. If the circuit tests normal, replace the appropriate speaker.

Speaker Malfunction Amplifier Output Testing -- LHD --UQA

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X2 and X3 connectors at the amplifier.
  2. Radio ON, test for less than 1 volt between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground:
  3. • Left front speaker output (+) - terminal 8 X2
    • Left front speaker output (-) - terminal 7 X2
    • Right front speaker output (+) - terminal 5 X3
    • Right front low speaker output (-) - terminal 1 X3
    • Left rear speaker output (+) - terminal 2 X2
    • Left rear speaker output (-) - terminal 1 X2
    • Right rear speaker output (+) - terminal 15 X2
    • Right rear speaker output (-) - terminal 16 X2
    • Left subwoofer speaker output (+) - terminal 6 X3
    • Left subwoofer speaker output (-) - terminal 2 X3
    • Right subwoofer speaker output (+) - terminal 3 X3
    • Right subwoofer speaker output (-) - terminal 7 X3
    • Center speaker output (+) - terminal 4 X2
    • Center speaker output (-) - terminal 3 X2
    • Roof speaker output (+) - terminal 6 X2
    • Roof speaker output (-) - terminal 5 X2
    If greater than the specified range, test both circuits of the affected speaker for a short to voltage.
  4. Radio OFF, test for infinite resistance between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground:
  5. • Left front speaker output (+) - terminal 8 X2
    • Left front speaker output (-) - terminal 7 X2
    • Right front speaker output (+) - terminal 5 X3
    • Right front low speaker output (-) - terminal 1 X3
    • Left rear speaker output (+) - terminal 2 X2
    • Left rear speaker output (-) - terminal 1 X2
    • Right rear speaker output (+) - terminal 15 X2
    • Right rear speaker output (-) - terminal 16 X2
    • Left subwoofer speaker output (+) - terminal 6 X3
    • Left subwoofer speaker output (-) - terminal 2 X3
    • Right subwoofer speaker output (+) - terminal 3 X3
    • Right subwoofer speaker output (-) - terminal 7 X3
    • Center speaker output (+) - terminal 4 X2
    • Center speaker output (-) - terminal 3 X2
    • Roof speaker output (+) - terminal 6 X2
    • Roof speaker output (-) - terminal 5 X2
    If less than the specified value, test both circuits of the affected speaker for a short to ground.
  6. If all circuits test normal, reconnect all harness connectors at the amplifier.
  7. Radio ON, disconnect the appropriate speaker.
  8. Test for 5.0-7.5 volts between the signal circuit terminals and ground.
  9. If less then the specified range test the circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the amplifier.
    If greater then the specified range test the circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the amplifier.
  10. If the circuit tests normal, replace the appropriate speaker.
