Diagnostic Fault Information

Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

Circuit Description

With the windshield wiper switch set in the AUTOMATIC position, when the rain sensor detects the presence of moisture on the windshield, it sends a signal to the Body Control Module (BCM). Upon receiving the signal, the BCM turns on the windshield wipers. The wipers will continue working until the rain sensor no longer detects moisture on the windshield.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • The ignition is ON.
    • The windshield wiper switch is in the AUTOMATIC position.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The BCM detects a fault in the rain senor circuit.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The automatic wipers will not operate when the moisture hits the windshield..
    • The windshield wipers will only operate by using the wiper switch.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition for setting the DTC is no longer present.
    • The history DTC will clear after 50 fault-free ignition cycles.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Disconnect the A121 Rain Sensor connector.
  2. Using a DMM test the Rain sensor; power, ground, sensor 1 and sensor 2 for resistance.
  3. If greater than 5 ohms, repair or replace the effected circuit(s).
    If less than 5 ohms, replace the Rain sensor.
