Circuit Description

The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) runs continuous diagnostic tests on the system. When the ignition is turned ON, the SDM will check to see if the correct components are installed for the vehicle configuration. If the SDM detects that there are too few or too many components on the system, DTC B1019 will set. If the SDM has been replaced, make sure that the correct part number was installed for this vehicle.

DTC Descriptor

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC:

DTC B1019 System Configuration Error

This vehicle has DTCs which include DTC Symptoms. For more information on DTC Symptoms, refer to DTC Symptom Description in Vehicle DTC Information.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition voltage is within the normal operating voltage range.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • The SDM was programmed with the wrong options for the vehicle.
    • The wrong SDM was installed for the content of the vehicle.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The SDM commands ON the AIR BAG warning lamp via GMLAN serial data.
    • The SDM disables all deployments.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

    • The correct SDM must be installed.
    • The correct components must be installed.

Diagnostic Aids

This DTC is an indication that an incorrect SDM is installed in the vehicle.

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This test checks for current SDM DTCs.

  2. This test checks to see if the correct vehicle identification number (VIN) is programmed in the body control module (BCM).

  3. This step explains that the BCM must be programmed.

  4. This test checks to see if after clearing the DTCs, if this DTC is current then it is possible that the wrong SDM has been installed.

Important: The EL-39021-460 CANdi module must be used with the Tech 2.

  1. Install a scan tool, and request the SIR DTC display.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Does the scan tool indicate that DTC B1019 is current?

Go to Step 3

Go to Step 8

3

With the scan tool, verify that the body control module (BCM) is programmed with the correct vehicle identification number (VIN) that is stored in the BCM to the VIN plate of the vehicle.

Is the BCM programmed with the correct VIN?

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 4

4

Use the scan tool to program the correct VIN into the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration in Computer/Integrating Systems.
