This bulletin is being revised to provide two repair procedures for vehicles built in two different production date ranges. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 05-08-54-001B (Section 08 - Body and Accessories).


Condition

Some customers may comment of any of the following conditions:

    • Horn inoperative.
    • High effort to sound horn.
    • Horn only sounds when certain spots are pressed.

Cause

These conditions may be caused by corrosion on the horn contacts or the horn pad spring tension may be too high.

Clean horn contacts or replace the horn pad springs.

Do not replace the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.

Clean the horn pad contacts or replace the four horn pad springs using one of the procedures listed below. Refer to the vehicle production date range for the proper repair procedure for the vehicle you are working on.

Clean horn pad contacts and replace horn pad springs (Repair procedure for vehicles built prior to November 1, 2005)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to the SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 procedure in SI (Document ID# 1527849).
  3. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module using J 44298-A.
  4. On the back side of the module, remove the four horn pad springs. Twist and pull to remove.
  5. Clean the copper contacts on the steering wheel and inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  6. Install the four new horn pad springs, P/N 15868953, to the module. These springs are a new lower effort part.
  7. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  8. Enable the SIR system. Refer to the SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 procedure in SI (Document ID# 1527849).
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.

Clean horn pad contacts only (Repair procedure for vehicles built on November 1, 2005 or later)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to the SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 procedure in the service information (SI Document ID# 1527849).
  3. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module using J 44298-A.
  4. Clean the horn contacts on the steering wheel and inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  5. Do not replace the horn springs. Vehicles built in this production date range already have the lower effort springs.
  6. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  7. Enable the SIR system. Refer to the SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 procedure in SI (Document ID# 1527849).
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
