GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

When the driver information center (DIC) powers up it will display all segments on for 2 seconds. Then the DIC will return to display status it had before no power condition. In the absence of vehicle communications, a double dash (--) displays in the digits section.

There are 3 buttons on the DIC:

    • Set/Reset button
    • Information button
    • Menu button

Set/Reset Button

Pressing the Set/Reset button changes the display units. For example on the instrument panel cluster (IPC) when the Set/Reset button is pressed the speed will change between miles and kilometers.

Pressing the Information, up or down, button changes the modes of operation for the driver information center (DIC). There are ten display modes available in the following order:

    • Odometer - Season
    • Trip A
    • Trip B
    • Time Elapsed
    • Average Speed
    • Fuel Range
    • Average Fuel Economy
    • Instantaneous Fuel Economy
    • Battery
    • Oil Life

Average Speed

Average speed is calculated as the ratio between the following values:

    • Average Speed=Distance/Ignition On
    • Distance=Accumulated distance since last reset
    • Ignition On=Accumulated ignition on time since last reset

Ignition on time is measured from the time that the ignition is turned ON, to the time when the ignition is turned OFF.

You can reset the Average Speed mode by depressing and holding down both the MODE and Set/Reset buttons for more than 3 seconds. The value of this mode is retained during ignition OFF.

Fuel Range

The DIC calculates the distance that the vehicle can travel under current fuel economy and fuel level conditions.

The fuel range is calculated from cumulative fuel usage, fuel remaining, and odometer information

Average Fuel Economy (AFE)

AFE is calculated as the ratio between the following values:

    • AFE=Distance/Fuel
    • Distance=The accumulated distance since the last AFE reset
    • Fuel=The accumulated fuel consumption since the last AFE reset

You can reset the AFE mode by depressing and holding down the Set/Reset buttons for more than 3 seconds. The value of this mode is retained during ignition OFF.

Instantaneous Fuel Economy (IFE)

Instantaneous fuel economy is calculated as the ratio between the following values:

    • IFE=Distance/Fuel
    • Distance=The accumulated distance since last update
    • Fuel=The accumulated fuel delivered since last update

You cannot reset the IFE mode. The value of this mode is retained during ignition OFF.

Menu Button

Pressing the Menu button changes the personalization operation for the driver information center (DIC). There are six menu items available.

    • Units
    • Language
    • Personalization
    • Compass Zone
    • Compass Calibration
    • Blank Screen

Units

This mode allows the selection between English or Metric units. Pressing the Set/Reset button will select either ENGLISH or METRIC.

Language

This mode allows the selection of the language in which the DIC messages will appear. The available languages are: ENGLISH, FRENCH, and SPANISH. Pressing the Set/Reset button will select the desired language

Personalization

For vehicle personalization refer to Owner's Manual.

Temperature Mode

The ambient temperature displays in the DIC. The temperature display is updated every second and the temperature will not change from its initial temperature until the vehicle has been driven at 15 mph. If the ambient temperature is below 3°C (37°F), the temperature reading will toggle between displaying the outside temperature and the word ICE for two minutes. If the temperature is less than minus 40°F for more than 2 seconds, OC will display. If the temperature is above 140°F for more than 2 seconds, SC will be displayed. If OC or SC is displayed DTCs will be set. The temperature display updates once every 2 seconds.

Compass Mode

The compass displays an 8 point compass heading in the driver information center (DIC). The compass will display the current vehicle direction relative to one of 8 compass headings using N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, and NW for the readout. For compass calibration and compass magnetic variation adjustment refer to Electronic Compass Calibration.

Dimming Control

Display dimming for the driver information center (DIC) follows the radio dimming characteristics. Upon activation of the park lamps, the display steps from maximum brightness to dim. While in the dim mode, further dimming is controlled by the pulse width modulation (PWM) Dimming Signal of the instrument panel (I/P) dimming control. The display goes blank upon lowest dimming request of the dimming control.
