HIGH COLD HORN BLOWING EFFORT CUSTOM STEERING WHEELS

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1982-85 Buick 'J', 'X', 'A', 'G', With Sport Or Custon Steering Wheel 1982-85 Buick 'E' With Sport Steering Wheel 1982-83 Buick 'B' With Sport Steering Wheel 1982-85 Buick 'B' With Custom Steering Wheel 1982-85 Buick 'C' With Custom Steering Wheel

During cold weather, the effort required to energize the horn may be higher than some owners desire due to the stiffness of the vinyl and foam materials in the horn pad/cap at low temperatures.

The horn pad/cap was changed to the softer vinyl June 12, 1984. Additional switch contact effort changes were recently made on the service horn pad assemblies. To correct owner vehicles, the softer vinyl horn pad/cap is available as a replacement through the normal parts channels.

Note: Ornamentation on the 1984 custom pad is slightly reduced from 1983.

On 1985 Skyhawk, Skylark, Century, Regal and LeSabre with custom steering wheel, changes in switch contact effort on custom horn pad assemblies were in effect at all assembly plants October 5, 1984. These changes will assist to reduce cold horn blow effort on the custom horn pad assemblies. The custom pad can be identified by its boomerang shape (see Figure). The new horn pads are distinguished from the old by copper colour horn contacts on the back side and a lead wire that snaps on the pad assembly rather than being riveted.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
