CRUISE CONTROL TRANSDUCER REPLACEMENT INFORMATION

THIS IS AN EXTENSION OF A PREVIOUSLY ISSUED INFORMATION BULLETIN CONCERNING THE SERVICE REPLACEMENT OF CRUISE CONTROL TRANSDUCERS. A BULLETIN ISSUED IN AUGUST OF 1980, 80-I-184, ADDRESSED THE BASIC IMPORTANCE OF SERVICING A RESUME CRUISE SYSTEM ONLY WITH A RESUME CRUISE TRANSDUCER AND RESUME VALVE ASSEMBLY. THE MAJOR DIFFERENCES IN THE FOUR TRANSDUCERS CURRENTLY IN USE ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1.NON-RESUME TRANSDUCER - HAS NO RESUME SOLENOID (SEE FIGURE 1). 2.NON-RESUME TRANSDUCER (DIESEL) - HAS NO RESUME SOLENOID - BLUE CASTING - THREE (3) CONNECTORS ARRANGED VERTICALLY. 3.RESUME TRANSDUCER - HAS RESUME SOLENOID - MOUNTING BOSSES IN CASTING FOR RESUME SOLENOID VALVE. (SEE FIGURE 2) "R" AS THE FIRST LETTER IN ITS BROADCAST CODE. 4.RESUME TRANSDUCER (DIESEL) HAS RESUME SOLENOID - MOUNTING BOSSES IN CASTING FOR RESUME SOLENOID VALVE - BLACK OR BLUE CASTING - THREE (3) CONNECTORS ARRANGED VERTICALLY (FIGURE 3) "R" AS THE FIRST LETTER IN ITS BROADCAST CODE. NONE OF THESE UNITS ARE TO BE INTERCHANGED. WHEN SERVICING ANY CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM, SERVICE REPLACEMENT MUST BE MADE BY CORRECT SERVICE REPLACEMENT PART NUMBERS. SERVICE MANUAL DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES PROVIDE INFORMATION FOR CHECKING THE RESUME VALVE ASSEMBLY. THE VALVE ASSEMBLY MAY BE REPLACED BY THE DEALER, IF NECESSARY. HOWEVER, IF THE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE INDICATES THE NEED FOR TRANSDUCER ASSEMBLY SERVICE, THE RESUME VALVE MUST BE SENT, ALONG WITH THE TRANSDUCER, TO AN AC DELCO TRANSDUCER REPAIR STATION. THIS IS NECESSARY BECAUSE THE TRANSDUCER AND RESUME VALVE ASSEMBLY ARE TESTED AS AN ASSEMBLY. WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO SEND A TRANSDUCER TO THE AC DELCO SERVICE CENTER FOR REPAIR, THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE MAY BE USED TO MAINTAIN AN OPERATIONAL SPEEDOMETER: 1.MAKE THE PLACE FROM THE TEMPLATE SHOWN IN FIGURE 4 OUT OF A SUITABLE MATERIAL. 2.REMOVE TWO (2) SCREWS FROM A DISCARDED TRANSDUCER TO SEPARATE THE MAGNET SHAFT GEAR AND HOUSING ASSEMBLY FOR USE WITH THIS PLATE. THE SCREWS MAY BE USED TO FASTEN THE MAGNET SHAFT GEAR AND HOUSING ASSEMBLY TO THE PLATE (FIGURE 5). 3.THIS UNIT CAN THEN BE MOUNTED ON THE CAR AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE TRANSDUCER SO THAT THE SPEEDOMETER WILL BE OPERATIONAL WHILE THE TRANSDUCER IS OUT FOR THE REPAIR. THE VACUUM SOURCE HOSE MUST ALSO BE PLUGGED. * ILLUSTRATIONS IN BULLETIN **

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
