J 44915 Seal Installer

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 688821  Size: SH
  1. Drain the differential lubricant. Refer to Lubricant Change .
  2. Remove the torque tube assembly. Refer to Driveline Torque Tube Replacement .
  3. Remove the drive pinion oil seal (1) from the drive pinion housing and discard.

  4. Object Number: 630669  Size: SH
  5. Remove the pinion housing-to-differential bolts (1).

  6. Object Number: 630670  Size: SH
  7. Remove the drive pinion and housing assembly (1).
  8. Carefully remove the drive pinion housing shim (2) from the differential (3).

  9. Object Number: 630673  Size: SH
  10. Remove the O-ring seal (4) from the drive pinion housing and discard.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 630673  Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the O-ring seal with synthetic gear oil GM P/N United States 12378514 Canada P/N 88901045 or equivalent.
  2. Using the J 44915 , install the oil seal (2) to the drive pinion housing.
  3. Install the O-ring seal (4) to the drive pinion housing.

  5. Carefully install the drive pinion housing assembly (1) and shim (2) to the differential carrier (3).

  6. Object Number: 630669  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the pinion housing-to-differential mounting bolts (1).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (106 lb in).

  9. Lubricate the sealing surfaces of the drive pinion oil seal (1) with synthetic gear oil GM P/N United States 12378514 Canada P/N 88901045 or equivalent.
  10. Install the torque tube assembly. Refer to Driveline Torque Tube Replacement .
  11. Fill the differential with synthetic gear oil. Refer to Lubricant Change .
