Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
  2. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, then no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, then remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  4. Remove the tire and the wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  5. Hand tighten two wheel lug nuts in order to retain the rotor to the hub.

  6. Object Number: 176947 Size: SH
  7. Compress the rear caliper piston.
  8. 6.1. Install a large C-clamp (3) over the top of the caliper housing (2) and against the back of the outboard pad.
6.2. Slowly tighten the C-clamp (3) until the piston pushes into the caliper bore enough to slide the caliper (2) off the rotor.
6.3. Remove the C-clamp from the caliper.

    Object Number: 176946 Size: SH
  9. Remove the upper caliper bolt (2).

  10. Object Number: 176945 Size: SH

Notice: Use care to avoid damaging pin boot when rotating caliper.

  11. In order to access the pads, rotate the caliper downward.
  12. Remove the pads (9, 10) from the caliper bracket (12).
  13. Remove the two retainer slides (11) from the caliper bracket (12).
  14. Inspect the following parts for cuts, tears, or deterioration. Replace any damaged parts:
  15. • The disc brake mounting and hardware-Refer to Rear Disc Brake Mounting and Hardware Inspection .
    • The caliper dust boot-Refer to Brake Caliper Inspection .
  16. Inspect the caliper bolts (1) for corrosion or damage. If corrosion is found, use new caliper bolts when installing the caliper.

Installation Procedure

  1. Using a C-clamp, bottom the piston into the caliper bore. Use an old brake pad or wooden block across the face of the piston. Do not damage the piston or the caliper boot.

  2. Object Number: 176945 Size: SH
  3. Install the two retainer slides (11) to the caliper bracket.
  4. Important: The wear sensor is on the outside pad. The sensor is positioned at the trailing or downward edge of the pad during forward wheel rotation.

  5. Install the pads (9, 10) to the caliper bracket (12).
  6. Notice: Use care to avoid damaging pin boot when rotating caliper.

  7. Remove the support and reposition the caliper (15) back down over the front pads.
  8. Lubricate the bolt and the bolt boot .
  9. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  10. Install the upper caliper bolt.
  11. Tighten
Tighten the caliper bolt to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  12. Remove the two wheel lug nuts retaining the rotor to the hub.
  13. Install the tire and the wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
  16. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  17. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps  10 and  11 until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
  18. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the proper level. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling .
  19. Burnish the pads and rotors. Refer to Brake Pad and Rotor Burnishing .
