J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Important: The A/C Refrigerant Filter, A/CDelco P/N 151696 must be installed to the A/C condenser tube between the condenser and evaporator. The installation of this A/C refrigerant filter eliminates the need for flushing the A/C system.

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the evaporator tube from the condenser tube. Refer to Condenser Tube Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 741304 Size: SH

Important: Measure from the condenser block fitting end of the condenser tube. Cut the tube with a tubing cutter.

  4. Measure 110 mm (4.3 in) and mark the condenser tube.
  5. Important: Do not allow metal shavings to enter the condenser tube during cutting or when removing the burrs.

  6. Cut the condenser tube.
  7. Measure 60 mm (2.4 in) and mark the condenser tube.
  8. Cut the condenser tube.
  9. Remove any burrs from the cut ends of the condenser tube.
  10. Important: You must first remove the O-ring from the filter before you seat the ferrules to the condenser tube.

  11. Remove the O-ring from the A/C refrigerant filter.
  12. Install one flare nut and one ferrule to the condenser tube with the tapered end of the ferrule facing the flare nut.
  13. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Important: Fully seat the A/C refrigerant filter onto the condenser tube.

  14. Install the A/C refrigerant filter to the condenser tube with the arrow pointing toward the evaporator.
  15. Tighten
Tighten the A/C refrigerant filter flare nut to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  16. Install one flare nut and one ferrule to the other half of the condenser tube with the tapered end of the ferrule facing the flare nut.
  17. Install the A/C refrigerant filter to the condenser tube.
  18. Tighten
Tighten the A/C refrigerant filter flare nut to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  19. Loosen the flare nuts and remove the A/C refrigerant filter from the condenser tube.
  20. Lubricate and install the O-ring to each end of the condenser tube. Refer to O-Ring Replacement .
  21. Important: Fully seat the filter to the ferrules in order to ensure that the O-ring seat inside of the filter housing.

  22. Install the A/C refrigerant filter to the condenser tube with the arrow pointing toward the evaporator.
  23. Tighten
Tighten the A/C refrigerant filter flare nuts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  24. Install the evaporator tube to the condenser tube. Refer to Condenser Tube Replacement .
  25. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
  26. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  27. Leak test the fittings of the component using J 39400-A .
