J 21177-A Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the rear wheels and tires. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 732929  Size: SH
  4. Relieve cable tension from the park brake system at the equalizer. There should be no tension on the park brake cables, so that the brake shoes are positioned only by the adjuster strut.

  5. Object Number: 239094  Size: SH
  6. Remove the rear drums. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  7. Set the J 21177-A so that the J 21177-A contacts the inside diameter of the drum at the widest point.

  8. Object Number: 239090  Size: SH
  9. Position the J 21177-A over the shoes at the widest point.
  10. Turn the adjuster strut until the shoes just contact the J 21177-A .
  11. Repeat steps two through five for the other rear brake assembly.
  12. Install the rear drums. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  13. Install the rear wheels and tires. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Adjust the park brake cable system. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment in Park Brake.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
