Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 499845  Size: SH

    Notice: Remove the oil level sensor, located in the oil pan, before the oil pan is removed. The sensor may be damaged if the oil pan is removed first.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Drain the engine oil.
  3. Remove the flywheel cover. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement.
  4. Remove the oil level switch. Refer to Engine Oil Level Indicator Switch Replacement
  5. Remove the oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
  6. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  7. Remove the oil pan.
  8. Remove the oil pump pipe and screen. Refer to Oil Pump Suction Pipe and Screen Assembly Replacement.
  9. Remove the oil pan gasket.
  10. Clean the oil pan and cylinder block mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1794843  Size: SH
  1. Apply a continuous bead 3.0 mm (0.19 in) thick in diameter of RTV GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent on the engine block in the pattern shown above.

  2. Object Number: 1794845  Size: SH
  3. Apply an additional drop of RTV GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent to all four corners of the block where the front and rear covers meet (1).

  4. Object Number: 638517  Size: SH
  5. Install the oil pan.
  6. Clean the oil pan bolts.
  7. Apply one drop of GM P/N 12345382, GM P/N Canada 10953489 to each bolt.
  8. Install the oil pump pipe and screen. Refer to Oil Pump Suction Pipe and Screen Assembly Replacement.
  9. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

    Important: Do not over tighten the oil pan bolts or damage to the pan could occur.

  10. Install the oil pan bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pan bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in).

  12. Install the oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
  13. Install the flywheel cover. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement.

  15. Install the oil level switch. Refer to Engine Oil Level Indicator Switch Replacement
  16. Lower the vehicle.
  17. Refill the engine oil. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities.
