Circuit Description

DTC B1656 indicates that the odometer portion of the instrument cluster EEPROM, which stores the vehicle mileage, has an unrecoverable error. The odometer is no longer accurate.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

DTC B1656 sets when the instrument cluster detects an EEPROM error during a diagnostic system test.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

When DTC B1656 is set current, the instrument cluster displays the word ERROR in the season odometer display.

Diagnostic Aids

Replace the instrument cluster. The EEPROM is not serviceable. If DTC B1656 sets, perform the following steps:

  1. Refer to the most recent service information in order to obtain the approximate vehicle mileage.
  2. Contact an authorized Delco® service center.
  3. Return the faulty instrument cluster to the service center.
