DOOR TRIM AREA NOISE (SERVICE PROCEDURES)

SUBJECT: DOOR TRIM AREA NOISE

MODELS AFFECTED: 1991-93 PARK AVENUE/ULTRA 1992-93 LESABRE

CONDITION:

--------- Some owners may experience a noise coming from the door trim area.

CORRECTION:

---------- Listed below are several conditions which can create a noise concern and the correction to each.

1. LOOSE "L" BRACKET ----------------- The "L" bracket is located just behind the reflector in the end of the door (see illustration). If this bracket is loose, it will make a buzz type noise. Remove the reflector and assure the bracket attaching screws are tight and not stripped. Insert a piece of plastic tape between the bracket and the door inner panel to eliminate the metal to metal contact.

2. WATER DEFLECTOR --------------- The water deflector must be properly installed to prevent both water leaks and noise. The deflector must be completely attached to the inner door panel. The deflector must be totally smooth and in the proper location. Assure the deflector has not bridged across the recess in the door inner panel (see illustration). Bridging can be found by pushing in on the deflector in areas where adhesive can be seen on the inner door panel, but the deflector is not stuck down. As the deflector is pushed in it sticks for a moment then releases again. This stick and release action can occur very rapidly with vehicle motion and make a buzz noise which appears to be coming from the door trim panel. To correct this condition, remove the water deflector. Remove the adhesive from the door inner panel. Apply a piece of tape to the edge of the adhesive on the water deflector in the area which was creating the stick and release condition so it cannot transfer more adhesive to the door inner panel. Re-install the deflector. Assure the deflector is smooth and fully attached to the door inner panel. Assure there is no place on the adhesive strip where the deflector comes loose again leaving adhesive deposited on the inner door panel.

3. LOOSE DOOR TRIM HANGER BRACKETS ------------------------------- Assure the door trim hanger brackets are properly attached to the door module (see illustration).

4. LOOSE MODULE ------------ Assure the module assembly is tight to the door.

5. LOOSE DOOR TRIM PANEL COMPONENTS -------------------------------- Assure that all the attachments to the door trim panel (woodgrain trim, side defroster duct, etc.) are tight and not creating the buzz sound. On 1991 Park Avenue/Ultra and 1992 LeSabres built before January 1992, the woodgrain trim panel was not attached to the dark back panel. To correct this condition, remove the woodgrain panel from the door trim by removing the inverted nuts on the back of the door trim panel. Apply silicone sealer between the light and dark color plastics on the back side of the woodgrain panel to correct the noise condition. This can be done by prying up gently on the dark color plastic to gain sufficient access to insert the silicone sealer.

6. LOCK KNOB RATTLE ---------------- The lock knob on the door trim can also create a rattle/buzz sound. Hold the lock knob to assure the noise stops. To correct this condition, remove the lock knob. Insert a small piece of foam into the lock knob, then re-insert the lock rod back into the lock knob. (See illustration). Attempt to rattle the knob on the lock rod to assure the noise has been eliminated. Assure the operation of the lock knob is still smooth as excessive foam in this area can hamper proper lock operation.
