    • J 24319-B Universal Steering Linkage Puller
    • J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 333146  Size: SH
  1. Lock the steering column by installing J 42640 into the underside of the steering column.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  4. Remove the power steering gear heatshield. Refer to Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement .

    Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

    Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

  6. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt. coupling.
  7. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.

  9. Remove the outer tie rods retaining nuts.
  10. Using the J 24319-B separate the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.

  11. Object Number: 337376  Size: SH
  12. Remove the power steering pressure and return hoses (1, 2) from the power steering gear.
  13. If equipped, disconnect the variable effort steering electrical connector.
  14. Remove the left stabilizer shaft insulator. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Insulator Replacement .

  16. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the knuckles.
  17. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts.
  18. Remove the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  19. Transfer the outer tie rods if replacing the power steering gear.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 337379  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering gear mounting bolts to 95 N·m (70 lb ft).

  5. Install the left stabilizer shaft insulator. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Insulator Replacement .

  6. Object Number: 337376  Size: SH
  7. Install the power steering pressure and return hoses (1, 2) to the power steering gear.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pressure and return hoses to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  9. If equipped, connect the variable effort steering electrical connector.

  10. Object Number: 470653  Size: SH
  11. Install the outer tie rod (1) to the steering knuckles.
  12. Install the outer tie rod retaining nuts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the outer tie rod retaining nuts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft) plus an additional 180 degrees.

  14. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
  15. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt to 47 N·m (37 lb ft).

  17. Install the power steering gear heatshield. Refer to Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement .
  18. Install the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  19. Lower the vehicle.

  20. Object Number: 333146  Size: SH
  21. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.
  22. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  23. Check the power steering system for leaks.
  24. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment .
