DIM HEADLAMPS, SLOW WINDSHIELD WIPERS, ETC.

SUBJECT: DIM HEADLAMPS, SLOW WINDSHIELD WIPERS, ETC., RESULTING FROM LOW/NO GENERATOR OUTPUT (RETROFIT WITH CS-144 GENERATOR)

MODELS: 1992-94 BUICK LESABRE AND PARK AVENUE 1992-94 OLDSMOBILE EIGHTY EIGHT AND NINETY EIGHT 1992-94 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON SUCH CONDITIONS AS DIM HEADLAMPS, SLOW WINDSHIELD WIPERS, ETC. AFTER TESTING, IT IS CONFIRMED THAT THE GENERATOR HAS LOW OR NO OUTPUT.

CAUSE:

IN SOME HIGH TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS, IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THE CS-130 AND CS-130 DUAL INTERNAL FAN (DIF) GENERATORS CANNOT PERFORM WITH RELIABILITY TO MEET OWNER EXPECTATIONS.

CORRECTION:

THE CS-144 RETROFIT HAS BEEN DEVISED TO INCREASE DURABILITY AND PERFORMANCE.

REPLACE THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS:

1. THE CS-130 AND CS-130 DIF GENERATORS WITH THE 140 AMP CS-144 GENERATOR, P/N 10463625.

IMPORTANT: THE CS-144 GENERATORS LISTED ABOVE WILL INCLUDE: THE OUTPUT TERMINAL PLASTIC CAP, P/N 3523277, AND THE OUTPUT TERMINAL NUT, P/N 11502811. THESE PARTS CAN BE ORDERED FROM GMSPO IF THEY ARE NOT WITH THE GENERATOR.

2. THE REGULATOR CONNECTOR, P/N 12117361, (FOR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH CS-130 DIF GENERATOR ONLY).

3. THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE/GENERATOR OUTPUT WIRE ASSEMBLY WITH P/N 12164880 (ON MODELS WITH L27 ENGINE) AND P/N 12164881 (ON MODELS WITH L67 ENGINE).

4. THE ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT WITH P/N 24504258 (ON MODELS WITH L27 ENGINE) AND P/N 24504257 (ON MODELS WITH L67 ENGINE).

REPLACEMENT:

1. REPLACE BATTERY CABLE/GENERATOR OUTPUT WIRE ASSEMBLY. REFER TO SECTION 6D1 IN THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL FOR BATTERY CABLE REPLACEMENT. BE SURE TO NOTE THE ROUTING OF THE CABLE.

2. REPLACE REGULATOR CONNECTOR (CS-130 DIF GENERATOR ONLY). REFER TO SECTION 8A IN THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL FOR WIRING, SPLICING PROCEDURES.

IMPORTANT: NOTE THE NUMBER AND LOCATION OF WIRES ON THE CS-130 DIF CONNECTOR. THE ONLY WIRE REQUIRED FOR THE CS 144 CONNECTOR IS THE "L" TERMINAL WIRE. THE REMAINING WIRES SHOULD BE TAPED OFF AND POSITIONED AWAY FROM ANY MOVING COMPONENTS.

3. REPLACE CS-130 (OR CS-130 DIF) WITH A CS-144 GENERATOR. REFER TO SECTION 6D3 IN THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL FOR GENERATOR REPLACEMENT.

4. REPLACE THE GENERATOR DRIVE BELT. REFER TO SECTION 6A8 IN THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL FOR DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT.

LABOR OPERATION NUMBER: J4105 LABOR TIME: 0.6 HR. ADD: 0.1 HR. (TO REPLACE THE REGULATOR CONNECTOR ON THE CS-130 DIF GENERATOR)

IMPORTANT: THE CORE CHARGE FOR THE CS-144 IS HIGHER THAN THAT OF THE CS-130 AND CS-130 DIF GENERATORS.
