TRANSAXLE BOTTOM PAN LEAK(440) APPLYING SEALANT TO PAN BOLT

MODELS AFFECTED: 1984-1991 HYDRA-MATIC 4T60 (THM 440T4)

BULLETIN COVERS:

Whenever the oil pan has been removed on any Hydra-Matic 4T60 (THM 440T4) transaxle, it may be necessary to use LOCTITE 242 (R) (or equivalent) to reduce the potential for fluid leaks on any blind (not through) bolt holes for oil pan bolts.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

If the transaxle has a leak from any oil pan bolt, clean the bolt(s) and bolt hole(s) in the transaxle case with a suitable solvent to insure that it is free of dirt and transmission fluid. Apply Loctite 242 (R) (or equivalent) to the bolt per the sealant manufacturer's instructions and allow the compound to cure according to the sealant manufacturer's recommendations.

IMPORTANT:

The fluid leak could also be caused by a cut or damaged 1-2 servo seal or other damaged seals or gaskets in the leak area, or by transaxle case porosity. If necessary, use one of the fluid leak diagnosis methods, such as powder or black light and dye methods listed in section 7A of the Service Manual. Correct the leak as necessary.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
