REPEAT A/C COMPRESSOR FAILURE (INSTALL NEW INLINE FILTER)

SUBJECT: REPETITIVE A/C COMPRESSOR CONDITION (Revised to Update Information)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1985-1988 'C', 1986-1988 'H' WITH A/C

After a compressor internal condition is experienced, the expansion (orifice) tube assembly should be removed and checked for contamination on the filter screens. If contamination is noted, discard the orifice tube assembly and install the new inline filter in the evaporator (liquid line) between the condenser and the orifice tube.

Some vehicles have the expansion tube assembly located at the evaporator inlet, while others have the expansion tube assembly remote from the evaporator inlet.

Install tube assembly, air conditioning rear with filter indicated below:

Cadillac information

The new service liquid filter assemblies are currently available from CANSPO for 1985-1988 DeVilles and Fleetwoods. The service liquid line filter assemblies contain an integral refrigerant system filter which eliminates the need to flush the refrigerant system after a compressor failure. The 1985-1987, refer to Figure 1, and 1988, refer to Figure 2, model liquid filter assemblies are pictured below.

When servicing the compressor in a 1985-1988 Deville or Fleetwood, use the procedure outlined below. This procedure replaces the A/C system flushing procedure outlined in the Service Information Manual.

CAUTION:

Before any service is attempted which requires opening of the refrigerant system, the technician should be thoroughly familiar with the information contained under the heading ON-CAR SERVICE in Section 1C of the Service Information Manual.

1. Replace the compressor assembly as described in Section 1C of the appropriate Service Information Manual.

2. Remove the production liquid line assembly and install the appropriate service liquid line filter assembly as described below:

A. On 1985-1987 vehicles disconnect the liquid line connection at the orifice tube. On 1988 vehicles disconnect liquid line from evaporator fitting. Remove orifice tube and inspect for debris; and if necessary, clean or replace it. If in the unlikely event a screen on the orifice tube is ripped, the evaporator core, and orifice tube must be replaced. Discard old O-ring and install new GM replacement neoprene O-ring, P/N 52450547.

B. Disconnect liquid line connection at the condenser.

C. Remove liquid line from vehicle.

D. Remove high side temperature sensor from production liquid line, discard old O-ring, and install new GM replacement neoprene O-ring, P/N 3093509.

E. Lubricate all O-rings with refrigerant oil.

F. Install high side temperature sensor in service liquid line filter assembly.

G. On 1985-1987 vehicles install orifice tube in service liquid line filter assembly.

H. Install liquid line filter assembly in vehicle.

I. Connect liquid line connection at the condenser.

J. On 1985-1987 vehicles connect the liquid line connection at the orifice tube. On 1988 vehicles connect the liquid line connection at the evaporator.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
