DEFINITION: The BCM sounds the key in the ignition reminder when one or more of the following conditions are present:

    • The key is not inserted in the ignition key cylinder.
    • The driver's door is closed.
    • The ignition switch is in the RUN position

Was the BCM Diagnostic System Check performed?

  1. Ensure that the IP dimmer switch is in the OFF position.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  3. Lower the driver's window in order to prevent a lockout.
  4. Close all of the vehicle doors.

Are the courtesy lights OFF?

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  2. Connect a scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  4. Use the scan tool in order to monitor the key in the ignition switch input .
  5. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  6. Remove the key from the ignition switch while monitoring the scan tool.

Does the scan tool indicate the key in the ignition switch input is inactive with the key removed from the ignition switch?

  1. Ensure that the key is removed from the ignition switch.
  2. Open, then close the driver's door.

Does the BCM sound the key in the ignition reminder?

  1. Remove the key from the ignition key cylinder.
  2. Using a test light, backprobe between B+ and the BCM connector C1 terminal D1.

Is the test light OFF?

  1. Leave the test light connected form the previous step.
  2. Disconnect C201.
  3. Observe the test light again.

Is the test light OFF?

The key in the ignition reminder is always ON, due to a malfunction between the BCM and the driver's door lock ajar switch. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - Lighting Systems in Lighting Systems for diagnosis and repair.

  1. Replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement in Body Control System.
  2. Perform the Setup New BCM procedure. Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control System.

Replace the ignition key alarm switch. Refer to Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.

  1. Turn the ignition to the LOCK position.
  2. Reconnect the connectors and reinstall the components that were removed.
  3. Inspect for BCM current DTCs. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - Body Control System in Body Control System.
