CLICK NOISE FROM REAR OF VEHICLE AT SPEEDS

THIS IS A MONTHLY SERVICE NEWSLETTER ARTICLE. THIS IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A PUBLISHED BULLETIN

SUBJECT: CLICK NOISE FROM REAR OF VEHICLE AT SPEEDS BELOW 25 MPH (INSPECT AND REPLACE PARK BRAKE PIVOT NUT)

MODELS: 1997-98 BUICK CENTURY

CONDITION:

TICKING/CLICKING NOISE COMING FROM ONE OR BOTH REAR WHEELS. FREQUENCY OF THE NOISE CHANGES DIRECTLY WITH VEHICLE SPEED AND IS MOST NOTICEABLE AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 0-25 MPH.

CAUSE:

PARKING BRAKE CABLE/SPRING MAY CONTACT THE INNER END OF THE WHEEL/AXLE STUDS AS WHEEL ROTATES. THIS CONDITION APPEARS TO BE CAUSED BY DISTORTION OF THE PIVOT NUT. THE SPREADING OF THE PIVOT NUT (FORKED END) ALLOWS EXCESSIVE OUTBOARD MOVEMENT OF THE BRAKE LEVER AND CABLE. THIS MOVEMENT MAY BE ENOUGH TO CAUSE CONTACT BETWEEN THE PARKING BRAKE CABLE/SPRING AND THE WHEEL/AXLE STUDS. FOR AN ILLUSTRATION, PLEASE REFER TO THE 97 W CAR SERVICE MANUAL, PAGE 5C1-3, FIGURE 1, ITEMS 5 AND 10.

CORRECTION:

REPLACE THE PIVOT NUT AND ADJUST THE PARKING BRAKE.
