DELAYED 2/3 SHIFT/LOSS OF 3RD THM 440-T4 3RD CLUTCH SEAL

TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS: SUBJECT: 1984-1987 THM 440-T4 (ME9) DELAYED 2-3 SHIFT OR LOSS OF 3RD GEAR

NOTICE: This bulletin is being reissued to include 1987 models. Please discard bulletin 86-7440-111.

BULLETIN COVERS:

Some THM 440-T4 transaxles may exhibit a delayed 2-3 shift or loss of 3rd gear caused by a cut or damaged 3rd clutch inner seal. To repair this condition, a new thicker 3rd clutch inner seal (Item #635A - Figure 1) has been released.

DATE OF PRODUCTION CHANGE:

This change entered production after September 1, 1986 (Julian Date 244) and is also incorporated in all Service Replacement Transaxle Assembly (SRTA) models, effective November 15, 1986 (Julian Date 319).

SERVICE ACTION:

Remove transaxle, disassemble, inspect and replace the 3rd clutch inner seal, as well as other parts included in the appropriate Service Package.

SERVICE PARTS INFORMATION:

To repair models built prior to aforementioned dates, a service package (Part Number 8646991) has been released.

This package includes the following parts:

Input Housing and Shaft Assembly Seal--3rd Clutch Piston Inner Roller Assembly Complete--3rd Clutch

To service 1987 models built after September 1, 1986 (Julian Date 244) or SRTA models after November 15, 1986 (Julian Date 319), use Seal Kit, Input and 3rd Clutch (Part Number 8644919).
