CLUNK NOISE : STEER INT. SHAFT INT. SHAFT SLIP JOINT MOTION

Models Affected: 1983-84 Century and Skylark

A "click" or "clunk" felt in the steering wheel during vehicle stops and starts may be caused by intermediate shaft slip joint motion. To correct this condition:

1. Remove intermediate shaft from car per Chassis Service Manual instructions.

2. Remove all foreign matter from shaft by wiping with a shop cloth.

3. Using chassis grease meeting requirements of GM-6031M (part mumber 1051344), grease the exposed shaft, FILL SHAFT POCKET AT POINT X and the inside of the tube at Point Y. See figure.

4. Fully compress intermediate shaft assembly two or three time to work grease into the assembly. REPEAT steps 3 and 4 three times.

5. Reinstall intermediate shaft assembly in car.

NOTE: When the intermediate shaft is reinstalled in the vehicle, care should be taken to assure the shaft boot seal is not dimpled or distorted. See figure. A distorted boot which rubs the intermediate shaft assembly may cause a slight steering bind when the vehicle is first operated in very cold weather.
