Exhaust Muffler Replacement 3.8L L26

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Notice: Refer to Catalytic Converter Movement Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Support the exhaust system.

  4. Object Number: 372616  Size: SH
  5. Remove the catalytic converter bolts.
  6. Remove the catalytic converter gasket.

  7. Object Number: 289492  Size: SH
  8. Remove the exhaust hanger insulators from the muffler.
  9. Remove the muffler from the support.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 289492  Size: SH
  1. Install the muffler to the support.
  2. Install the exhaust hanger insulators to the muffler.

  3. Object Number: 372616  Size: SH
  4. Install the catalytic converter gasket.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the catalytic converter bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  8. Remove the support from the exhaust system.
  9. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks and underbody contact.
  10. Lower the vehicle.

Retaining Nuts (Qty: 2)

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

Tip
Use a utility jack to support the exhaust system.

Tighten
45 N·m (33 lb ft)

Catalytic Convertor Gasket

Tip
DO NOT re-use the gasket, replace with NEW.

Front Insulator

Tip
If the insulator is found to be worn or damaged, replace the insulator.

Intermediate Insulator

Tip
If the insulator is found to be worn or damaged, replace the insulator.

5

Muffler/Exhaust System

Tip

    • Remove the utility jack.
    • With the aid of an assistant, remove the muffler/exhaust.

6

Rear Insulator (Qty: 4)

Tip
If the insulators is found to be worn or damaged, replace the insulator.
